The article, Problem-based learning (Hung, Jonassen,
& Liu, 2008) provides an overview of the development and implementation of
PBLs, including major characteristics and effectiveness as well as
effectiveness and areas of concern and needed improvement. The purpose of
problem based- learning is to provide an opportunity for students to construct knowledge
skills by working towards a solution to an authentic problem. The instructional
methodology arose in response to combatting rote memorization in the sciences
(particularly in 1970s and 1980s health science education) that ill equipped
students for clinical problem solving and life-learning skills (p. 487). It has
since expanded to various fields and professional education programs as well as
k-12 education. Key characteristics of the methodology include a reciprocal relationship
between the problem and the knowledge used to attempt to address the problem; a
self-directed and student-centered design which allows the opportunity for self-reflection,
collaboration, and communication; and role of teachers as facilitators and
support (pp. 488-489). PBLs produce better assessments that traditional
classrooms in long-term retention of material beyond rote memorization as well
as improving student’s problem-solving and higher order thinking skills. Students in classes utilizing PBLs were
encouraged to engage in more self-directed learning, which aided life-long
learning process development in addition to the positively received aspect of
boosting student confidence in their knowledge and skills. In addition, PBLs allow the opportunity to
incorporate and include technology at various stages within the problem-based
learning process from research to communication and demonstration of learned
material.
However, implementation issues can clash with the
positives of using PBLs in the classroom. For example, there can be differences
in the definition of self-directed learning between students and facilitators
(teachers, tutors, etc). Involved parties (students, teachers, etc) may be
reluctant to give up their traditional roles in the classroom in favor of the
more student-centered PBL classroom without proper training and continuing
support (p. 493-494). There can also be
issues with collaborative group activities without proper guidance, which can
downplay the effectiveness of using group processing to seek solutions, and the
tendency for experts to provide information rather than guidance towards
solutions. Furthermore, implementation at the curriculum and assessment levels
can also raise issues which can undermine the benefits of using PBLs,
discouraging the practice within the classroom. For example, although the article describes
the use of unstructured problems (with varying opportunities to reach
solutions) a poorly constructed problem can be counterproductive if design
models (such as the 3C3R PBL design model) are not employed to develop an
authentic, student-centered experience. However, the article recommends further
research to not only address the short-comings of implementing PBLs in the
classroom but to also further investigate the characteristics and impacts of
PBLs on student learning outcomes.
A possible
research topic into PBLs could be to investigate the use of problem-based
learning in professional development activities to promote utilization in the
classroom as well as opportunities for addressing issues in science classrooms.
Is there supporting literature to show how professional learning communities
use problem-based learning in on-going professional development? In other
words, do we model what we expect for students to do in our own continuing professional
education or is that why there are issues with implementation?

ReplyDeleteI appreciated your reflection on problem-based learning and it caused me to re-examine the issues with PBL.The key is try and remove as many barriers as possible to facilitate implementation. The first being the possible time constraints of managing the state required curriculum along with testing. Planning can help to alleviate this concern for many teachers. However, it does require time to think through the project completely to include checking for student understanding and desired outcomes. This purposeful planning creates a structured approach that still allows for inquiry while at the same time providing specific content support for implementation. For possible projects you suggest possible professional development on problem-based learning. I agree with you on the importance of PD, teachers should not only have a clear understanding of what it looks like in addition, they should have support on implementation within their classroom as well. The article I posted this week (Article H) elaborates on this very point. It addresses long-term professional development in problem-based learning with support in implementation. In addition, what makes this article interesting is the lesson occurs in a kindergarten classroom. The article is titled, "What's so Terrible About Swallowing an Apple Seed?" Problem-Based Learning in Kindergarten. If you get the opportunity to read it, it does address some of the issues you raised. Have you had the chance to implement PBL in your classroom?

DeleteI enjoyed reading your reflection. It seems to have proven very effective with medical students, but then again medical students are usually at the top of their class to begin with. I believe that in order for PBL to be effective, the students must be willing participants. Your research proposal seems like a great idea. Many times a new methodology is introduced to teachers and they don’t fully understand what the expectations are. It would be great for teachers to participate in a PBL lesson and get an idea of what barriers they might encounter when implementing it in their classrooms. I also agree with Laura and feel that one of the barriers might be the time constraint that we might encounter when following our scope and sequence. Do you feel that it is possible to implement PBL as an ongoing methodology in a classroom or should PBL lesson be isolated from other lessons?
ReplyDeleteI think it should be used if it appropriate for the lesson; it is disheartening when a great instructional strategy is overused inappropriately to appease the "this will be great for everything" gods. Sometimes it can be used as a multiple-unit umbrella while other times for a shorter lesson.

Your reflection was very clear and succinct and very well written. I like that you included not only the possible aspects associated with problem based learning but also included that challenges involving the issues of implementation of this strategy. A suggestion that I have for improvements on your posting would be that you could have provided a bit more detail in your possible research topic. I found your research topic to be very ambiguous and by providing more details, it would allow the reader to better envision your research approach. Based on your personal experience with implementing PBL’s into the district curriculum in your classroom, how receptive have your students been to this approach to learning?
